Official Sources of Earthquake Information
For authoritative earthquake data, alerts, and emergency information, consult these official organizations.
USGS Earthquake Hazards Program
The primary U.S. federal source for earthquake information. Provides real-time earthquake notifications, ShakeMaps, hazard assessments, and historical earthquake catalogs for the United States and worldwide.
USGS ShakeMap
Real-time maps of ground shaking produced automatically after each significant earthquake. ShakeMaps show estimated PGA, PGV, and instrumental MMI across the affected region and are the primary data source for Intensity Lab's site estimates.
Did You Feel It? (DYFI)
USGS crowdsourced intensity reporting system. If you felt an earthquake, your report helps improve ShakeMap accuracy and provides valuable data for seismological research.
Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN)
Operated jointly by Caltech and USGS, SCSN monitors seismicity in southern California and provides rapid earthquake notifications and waveform data for the region.
Northern California Seismic System (NCSS)
A collaboration between UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and USGS Menlo Park. Provides real-time seismic monitoring and data archiving for northern and central California.
Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN)
Monitors seismicity in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Operated by the University of Washington and University of Oregon in partnership with USGS.
CICESE — Red Sísmica del Noroeste de México
The Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada operates the primary seismic network for northwestern Mexico, including Baja California — the area covered by Intensity Lab's southern boundary.
EarthScope Consortium (formerly IRIS)
Manages a national seismic facility and provides open access to waveform data from thousands of seismographic stations worldwide. Primary source for archival research and network data.
Earthquakes Canada — Natural Resources Canada
The Government of Canada's official earthquake monitoring service, operated by Natural Resources Canada's Earth Sciences Sector. Provides real-time earthquake notifications, hazard assessments, and seismic monitoring data for Canada and adjacent regions.
European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC)
An international non-governmental organization composed of more than 70 member institutes. Provides rapid earthquake detection and information across Europe, the Mediterranean, and globally, combining seismic network data with crowdsourced eyewitness reports via their LastQuake platform.
Japan Meteorological Agency — Earthquake Information
Japan's official source for earthquake monitoring, early warning, and tsunami alerts. The JMA operates one of the world's most advanced seismic monitoring networks and provides real-time earthquake notifications, intensity maps, and hazard information for Japan and the surrounding region.
Intensity Lab is not affiliated with any of these organizations. All earthquake notifications and emergency guidance should come from official sources.
